The Brother Design Stars competition is a hotly contested competition for secondary school fashion students with junior and senior categories in both Fashion and Craft. The high calibre of the competition in recent years has attracted the attention of Margo Barton, a Fashion Professor at Otago Polytechnic.

Barton judged this year's Brother Design Stars competition, and offered advanced standing and direct entry into Otago Polytechnic to selected top performing competitors. Otago Polytechnic's Bachelor of Design (Fashion) degree only accepts 20-30 entrants per year, and is the highest ranked New Zealand fashion degree, according to the Business Of Fashion Top 50 Degrees in Fashion.

Additionally, the winners also receive $999 of Brother products, as well as the opportunity to have their garments shown at New Zealand Fashion Week as part of The Graduate Show supported by Brother.
