Christopher Duncan weaves beautiful handmade garments on his loom at the Tür, his new creative space. Tür means door in German and aptly titles his studio on 486 Karangahape Road, a gateway for all things creative, shared with Joseph Yen and Jason Lingard. Christopher began his career in fashion seven years ago when doing a Fashion Design Degree at Massey. He then learnt more about the industry by being a manager and buyer for a top Melbourne retailer. Christopher is interested in the flurry of the fashion world - it is fast but not really, trends come and go but do they? Within this vein, Christopher does not appreciate the waste caused by heavy consumer fashion. He spends a week at the least for each weave, which he cautiously designs as he goes. His yarns are sourced from NZ and his travel and they are by no means wasted as every strand is consciously included to add to the story of his weaving. One cone in particular that Christopher uses is made from the scraps at the edge of Indian sarees. A beautiful ivory colour is interrupted by the teal, orange and pink from the very end of a woman’s saree that would otherwise be waste. In a medium that is so personal Christopher is inspired by a wide range of things including, tribal textiles, indigo, photography and contemporary Chinese art for his Fashion Week collection. Christopher Duncan is showcasing for the first time at Fashion Week this year.
