Instagram to remove ‘likes’

Social media platform Instagram, owned by Facebook Inc, launched their shopping services only months ago and are already delving into their next dramatic revamp.

The service have announced that they will be trialling the removal of their ‘likes’ on the videos and pictures posted by their users. The move comes as the platform endeavours to contribute to the growing fight for awareness regarding mental health, with the service’s trial taking place during Mental Health Awareness Month.

A statement was released by Facebook to explain their decision to trial the updates to their service.

We are testing this because we want your followers to focus on the photos and videos you share, not how many likes they get.

The update is being run in Canada with the news being shared at the most recent F8 conference in San Jose, California earlier this month.

The announced trial has had a controversial reception, with some users praising the efforts of the group to adapt to their consumer's needs while others are turned off by the platform. With the proposed change aligning so closely with the launch of the group’s shopping service it is a wonder whether this once underground lead platform will become just another shopping app.
