MAORI FASHION SHOW ANNOUNCES DESIGNERS AND VISION

The vision for Tiki Ahua, the annual fashion, design, music and dance showcase, has been announced alongside a list of 22 designers who will draw from the act of creating fire.

Brands showcasing this year include Kharl WiRepa, Adrienne Whitewood, Natura Aura and Hanare Jewellery with the selection set to include a range of designs from streetwear through to tā moko (Māori tattoo).

“An exciting part of this event is not only the incredible contemporary fashion but also pulling through Maori arts. It’s been beautiful to see everything come together, and our NZ Maori Arts and Crafts Institute artists love the journey,” said Kiri Atkinson-Crean, general manager of sales and marketing, Te Puia.

This year’s theme Kā Mura: Set Alight was announced at Te Puia, Rotorua, which is inspired by the history of the subterranean goddesses of fire, Te Pūpū and Te Hoata, with Kā describing the act of setting alight and mura being the flame, together to mean the creation of new life.

The show will be held on 24 September at Te Whaaruruhau, Te Puia, Rotorua.
