This month saw one of the most fashion-forward and image conscious cities make it a crime to use anorexic models or encourage anorexia. France has joined Israel and Spain by cracking down on the glorification of dangerously thin women.
“It’s not just about protecting the models but also teenagers, because this body-image pressure also affects them and contributes to the emergence of eating disorders and tendencies to eat less and less,” said neurologist and legislator Olivier Veran.
The new law uses body max index as a guide to determine whether or not a model can work or earn money as a model. Anyone convicted of paying a model below the body mass index level could face six months in prison and $80,000 in fines.
Similar anti-anorexia bids failed to get approval in France in 2008, and according to the French health ministry, an estimated 40,000 people have anorexia 90 per cent being women.
