Patagonia Sues GAP for Copying Signature Flap Pocket

Outdoor clothing retailer Patagonia has recently filed a lawsuit against GAP, accusing the brand of copying its pocket design used on its popular Snap-T pullover fleece sweaters for the last three decades.

The complaint was filed in San Francisco's federal court. It cited that GAP's recent launch of fleece jackets have used Patagonia's buttoned flap pocket design and its rectangular "P-6" logo without permission.

"The adoption of designs and logos bearing even more similarity cannot have occurred by accident" stated Patagonia.

The clothing retailer is seeking unspecified damages, attorneys' fees and an injunction barring GAP from selling the infringing products.

Patagonia added that GAP's actions undermine its reputation and are aimed at making customers believe that the company was allowed to use its trademarks.

Patagonia's iconic Snap-T design has been featured in exhibitions at New York's Museum of Modern Art and London's Victoria & Albert Museum.

GAP has yet to respond.
