The New Zealand Fashion Week (NZFW) welcomes two dynamic Fijian designers, Temesia Tuicaumia (TEMESIA) and Zulfikar Ali (AZA), whose participation marks a significant moment for Pacific fashion on the international stage.
Their journey to NZFW has been made possible through the collaborative support of the Trade & Investment Office - Fiji High Commission New Zealand and Kahui Collective, underscoring a commitment to elevating Fijian design talent.
TEMESIA, founded by Temesia Tuicaumia, is renowned for blending modern tailoring with traditional Fijian motifs, creating garments that tell stories of heritage and innovation. The brand’s vision is to honour Pacific roots while speaking to a global audience, with pieces that celebrate identity, resilience, and beauty.
For NZFW 2026, TEMESIA presents the theme “Waves of Legacy”, inspired by the ocean’s role in Pacific life and the enduring strength of Fijian culture.
Motivated by a desire to showcase authentic Pacific voices, Temesia shares, “This collection is a tribute to my ancestors and a call for new conversations in fashion.”
Preparing for NZFW was both exhilarating and daunting. TEMESIA faced challenges in sourcing sustainable materials and adapting to international standards, but overcame them through collaboration and perseverance.
“Learning to navigate the expectations of an international audience pushed my creative boundaries,” Temesia notes.
Lessons learned include the importance of adaptability and building cross-cultural relationships. TEMESIA offers New Zealand audiences a fresh perspective on Pacific fashion, inviting a deeper appreciation for heritage and contemporary expression. The brand aims to inspire the industry to embrace diversity and foster creative exchanges across cultures.
AZA, led by Zulfikar Ali, is distinguished by its intricate artistry and elegant silhouettes, drawing from traditional Fijian craftsmanship and bold innovation. AZA’s collections are a celebration of colour, texture, and the stories woven into every garment.
For NZFW, AZA unveils “Island Prism”, a theme reflecting the interplay of light, tradition, and modernity. Zulfikar’s motivation stems from a passion to represent Fiji’s vibrant aesthetic and challenge perceptions of Pacific fashion.
“I want the world to see the sophistication and creativity that Fiji brings,” he says.
The journey to NZFW involved overcoming logistical hurdles, perfecting designs for an international runway, and learning to balance cultural authenticity with global appeal.
“The process taught me endurance and the value of teamwork,” Zulfikar reflects.
AZA’s experience has reinforced the importance of staying true to roots while embracing new opportunities.
AZA brings to New Zealand a unique blend of Pacific artistry and contemporary flair, offering industry professionals and audiences a window into Fiji’s evolving fashion story.
The participation of Temesia and Zulfikar at NZFW is made possible by the unwavering support of the Trade & Investment Office - Fiji High Commission New Zealand and Kahui Collective. Their partnership has facilitated access to resources, mentorship, and industry networks, empowering Fijian designers to succeed internationally.
