Best Friends, Meg and Mana, are the creative minds behind Cuda Sisters, which was founded in 2009. Cuda Sisters is a label designed to celebrate women and incorporates an emotional response within the design process.
The pair’s journey has been lifelong, with intertwining paths along the way. Both grew up within the arts and creative influences, the best friends and sisters by choice always knew that they would one day naturally find a home in a creative industry.
“Cuda is our natural expression as women and as artists. Although much work went into the brand's creation, it was never planned from a business point of view to start a label. Cuda came from our love for working together with colour, fabrics and the knowledge needed to express ourselves,” said the pair.
“Our love for business and intrigue into the complexity of the industry was something that was born along the way.”
Cuda Sisters is a celebration to convey one’s feelings and emotions through fashion. A fundamental signature of the style used for the brand is the use of colour. Be it a print, block colour, or dripping in sparkles, the duo are keen to use any type of bold or soft colour.
To further the pair’s love for craft and embellishment they recently made a long-awaited trip to India, where they connected with local artisans to further bring our dreams to life.
The upcoming collection from Opalus tells the tale of a long desperate hunt for an elusive pure treasure. Influenced by the elements, the feminine power in flowers and gemstones is a key part of the collection.
“We draw inspiration from life, love, art, music, people, films, nature, experiences, stories, communication and interaction. We are storytellers. It is how we create, communicate and plan for everything we do.”
The pair have had a few stand-out moments thus far, from seeing pieces being worn on the international stage, to having garments form on national television in Australia. Over the past twelve months, the pair are most proud of building the team around them.
“We can proudly say we love, respect and admire everyone we’re working alongside in both Aotearoa and now India. Finding such trust in our team makes our future visions not only exciting but attainable.”
Cuda Sisters would not have happened without dreaming big, which is exactly what they encourage anyone wanting to pursue a career in the industry to do.
“It’s a beast of a career, but if you have the calling and drive you have no choice but to dive in. Dream big, stay true to yourself and when decision-making, listen to your own voice.”
The pair are working on some exciting projects in the future, and this year are focussing on live events.
