iD Dunedin Emerging Designer: Canwen Zhao

Prioritising sustainability, the Canwen Zhao fashion project is about producing a line of secondhand clothing and material. Distributing and re-moulding these fabrics in a different light.

The co-main concept is utilising hoods to be a part of the garment, where the back of each garment is meant to specialise something on the back.

Zhao integrates traditional Chinese culture; she discussed, “It’s about the lucky things, meaning to transition from the old to the new.”

The idea came to fruition when Zhao realised her clothes were becoming congested in her room, and she wanted to make a bag or utilise the clothes to make something out of them.

Going forward, Zhao wants to continue working in the designer space, utilise her background and understanding of Chinese culture, and wove it into her garments.
