Remembering Vere Sharma

The New Zealand fashion community is mourning the passing of Vere Sharma, who passed away on Tuesday, 2 December. Vere was a widely respected industry figure whose contribution to New Zealand fashion spanned more than four decades, influencing both the commercial direction of the sector and the people working within it.

Vere began his professional career as an accountant before moving into the textile trade, a shift that would define his life’s work. In the late 1980s, he and his wife Christine founded De Vere Investments, initially operating from the front lounge of their Devonport home. The business steadily grew into a diversified operation supplying textiles, manufactured goods and garments across New Zealand and offshore markets. By the mid-2000s, De Vere had expanded into wholesale and later retail, reflecting Vere and Christine’s ability to identify opportunity and adapt to changing market conditions.

In 2007, the couple purchased RUBY, which went on to become one of New Zealand’s best-known contemporary womenswear brands. When Apparel interviewed Vere in 2016, he spoke candidly about the evolution of the business and his belief in design-led thinking, strong partnerships and the importance of offering something distinctive within the local market. Those principles continued to guide his work in subsequent years, including the acquisition of Meccano and the launch of menswear brand Modern Manners.

Across the industry, Vere was known not only for his commercial acumen but also for his personal approach. Widely regarded as warm, humble and generous with his time and knowledge. Many recall him as someone who welcomed conversation, offered thoughtful advice and encouraged others to have confidence in their ideas and capabilities.

Vere is remembered by his wife Christine and their children Em, Anna Lise, Jared, Ryan and Liam.
