iD Dunedin Emerging Designer: Beibei Li

Beibei Li’s revealed a five-piece collection for this year’s Dunedin Fashion Week.

Labelling the collection spirituality project, Li aimed to make sculptural pieces through a wooden stick in the back that would create folds in the structure.

Identifying the most effective draping fabrics tool required multiple levels of testing to ensure the result fit Li’s vision.

Taking elements from the philosophy of Buddhism and transforming them into garments, Li took inspiration from her meditation time.

“While I’m not religious, I meditate and use that time to practice and see what ideas would inspire me to create the garments,” said Li.

Utilising green to provide a sense of calmness and peace to the picture stemmed from taking inspiration from Indian culture.

Adopting the philosophy of yoga indicates that humans have a seventh chakra, which represents the heart and is coloured green. Positioning the green as the heart on the garment.

Moving forward, Li intends to continue producing sculptural pieces because she finds it connects with her perception of the world.

Li said, “Next time, I will utilise alternative colours but continue to use similar patterns.”

The designer, Li, is continuing to learn more about design and is working on her master's degree at RMIT.
