Kiwi Label Repurposes 81sqf of Leather for Collection

New Zealand accessory label Deadly Ponies is on a mission to be the world’s most responsible handbag brand as they present their second Recycle capsule, repurposing 81sqf of leather. Straight off the back of their first sell-out Recycle collection, their Recycle capsule has come full circle returning for its second instalment in 2021. Reflecting the label's ethos and firm belief in circularity, using pre-loved and off-cut leathers, their latest collection explores the smaller accessories in life with just the right dose of playfulness.Key pieces include the mirror and key cloche, AirPod cases, and sunglasses holders.

"This year, we have partnered with Sustainable Coastlines, donating ten percent from every purchase of our Recycle collection, supporting cleaner coastlines and protecting our natural biodiversity."

Deadly Ponies began with creative director, Liam Bowden, taking leather scraps from tannery off-cuts to create his very first designs, an ethos ingrained in their practices today.

For bags that have lived a full life, Deadly Ponies want to repurpose them so they can continue to be enjoyed and loved for years to come, rather than being sent to landfill. As a reward for being part of this journey and recycling your Deadly Ponies pieces, you will receive a $50 voucher (conditions apply).

To be fully circular, consideration of materials must be made at the design phase, with emphasis on how the piece can not just be stitched together, but taken apart. We prioritise using ethically-sourced materials with chrome-free, bio or vegetable tanning wherever possible to ensure circularity and a new ‘afterlife’. And that’s what this project is really about, celebrating not only the leather and the history of the products that we’ve made, but also the craftsmanship of our atelier in reducing our environmental impact, with the ability to create bespoke, limited pieces.
