Meet the Buyer | Hannah Parker, Palm Boutique

hannah parker owner and buyer for palm boutique

Hannah Parker had always immersed herself in fashion. However, buying women's fashion was a skill she picked up after purchasing designer clothing store Palm Boutique. Her previous experience saw her assisting a children's boutique owner with just a few buying trips. However, this newest chapter would see her completely taking the reins.

The handover period with the previous owner at Palm allowed her to learn how to make large indent orders and enhanced her buying skills. With the initial help, she quickly developed her skills and found her own groove in the buying process.

By working on the shop floor, Parker has also had the joy of getting to know the customers personally and gather feedback that has then heavily influenced her buying decisions. Along with her manager, who has been a key part of the Palm family for a while now and has helped to provide valuable input for the shop.

“With their help and the knowledge I have gained so far on the job, as well as the positive feedback from customers, I am now feeling more confident in buying decisions for Palm,” she explained.

Prior to purchasing Palm, Parker was a stay-at-home mum. Although she revelled in the joys of spending time with her two children each day, she knew it was time to follow her dreams and create a business in fashion. Her husband was already an accountant for Palm, which is what prompted her to buy the company in the first place. Eight months on, she could not be happier with her decision and through the support of her friends, family, staff and customers, she has found the perfect work-life balance that she loves.

The boutique stocks a curated selection of New Zealand brands with a small selection of international brands that are exclusive to the Nelson region. This also allows for designers to benefit from greater exposure and have their collections appreciated by many.

Parker is always drawn to fabric choices when viewing upcoming collections to stock. The colours, patterns, quality and fabric all play a considerable part even before looking at the styles of the garments. At the same time, looking for unique, high-quality, sustainable and versatile products that align well with currently stocked brands and suit the retail space. She makes sure not to follow strict trends and prefers to shop for the season that can then be worn for years to come.

Not only are the team at Palm passionate about stocking quality brands, customer service is also a top priority. The staff make sure to provide an individualised experience to all customers to help them find the perfect item to fit their style.

“Whether you are a regular or a first-time visitor, I want Palm to be a place that everyone feels welcome and can enjoy,” she said.

The future for Palm sees the potential for introducing new exciting brands that will complement the current range. Her husband is also working on growing the e-commerce side of the business.
