Wimbledon 2014 is now underway. Let’s take a look back at the most iconic outfits to sweat it out on the court.
- Suzanne Lenglen, 1922, the first woman to wear makeup on the court also appeared wearing a sleeveless, knee-length dress
- May Sutton Bundy, 1905, rolling up her sleeves and wearing a skirt that showed her ankles
- Maria Sharapova, 2008, hit the current trend with a tuxedo inspired outfit that won over fashion lovers
- John McEnroe, 1980s, shorts, red headband and fro, this iconic outfit is still worn today – on Halloween
- Gorgeous Gussie, 1950, her lacy French knickers caused a debate in parliament
- Anne White,1985, followed the rules by wearing all white… in a spandex suit
- Serena Williams, 2012, flashing purple in a light-weight dress
- Venus Williams, 2010, her flapper inspired outfit shimmied on the court
- Roger Federer, 2009, wooed the crowd in a dapper tennis suit, waistcoat and all
- Bethanie Mattek, 2006, her jacket was designed by a creator of a number of Lady Gaga outfits, Alex Noble
Wimbledon is now cracking down on their previously strict dress code by reminding players that: Any undergarments, caps, headbands, bandannas, wristbands, and socks must be white, except for a single trim of color no wider than one centimeter. Large manufacturers’ logos are also ‘not encouraged’.
Sponsoring fashion brands are going to have to be innovative in white this year if they are going to serve an iconic moment for Wimbledon 2014.
