Allbirds has debuted their first take on a retro-inspired, multi material sneaker - the Riser.
This new style is crafted using the brand's suite of eco-innovative materials and features a minimal and elevated design, allowing the sneaker to be a versatile wardrobe staple.
"In designing the Riser, we were inspired by the dimension and personality so often embodied in vintage, heritage sneaker style and then added the Allbirds design philosophy to make it completely unique,” said chief brand and product officer at Allbirds, Kate Ridley.
“We’re seeing a lot of demand from consumers for versatile footwear that draws comfort, cushion and fit technology from the performance category, but designed for lifestyle use. The Riser delivers exactly that, plus all-day comfort in a package that’s so much better for the planet.”
The release of the Riser is reflective of an evolution in Allbirds' design direction, as it continues to add to its product portfolio of versatile and sustainable sneakers.
With an expressive design created using sleek dimensions and lines, the brand has utilised strategic seaming to maximise material and pattern efficiency.
Organic cotton is thoughtfully placed around the forefoot and heel for a lightweight yet durable sneaker. Grown without chemicals or pesticides, the cotton Allbirds uses helpes to contribute to a healthier working environment for farmers and their land.
The Riser also features 100 percent TENCEL along the tongue and eyestay pieces. Constructed from eucalyptus tree fiber instead of the petroleum-based nylon typically found in classic ripstop materials, the addition of TENCEL gives the sneaker extra dimension and durability in areas of high wear and tear.
ZQ-certified Merino is also lined in the Riser's heel for comfort and security, as well as being the focal point of the shoe's semicircle design element.
Complimenting the ethical wool, is Allbirds' SweetFoam midsole, which is made using carbon-negative green EVA produced from sugarcane. This type of EVA is unique given that typical EVA is derived from synthetic materials.
“Within the footwear industry, it’s highly likely that a designer’s materials toolbox consists mostly of petroleum-based materials. At Allbirds, we’re very intentional about selecting the most responsible materials to create with. In order to do that, we have to think outside the box, allow nature to inspire us and push ourselves to see what’s possible,” added vice president of product design at Allbirds, Ashley Comeaux.
“The Riser is our most expressive style to date - unifying a range of our natural materials into a unique, street-forward design that
you’ll want to style up or down for wherever the day takes you.”
