Designer Focus: Allie Buckley, Itchy Knits

Itchy Knits, founded by Auckland-based designer, Allie Buckley, is a combination of high-quality knitwear clothing and carefully sourced materials.

Her journey in fashion started when she saw a streetwear exhibition in Tokyo, which lead to her experiment with her mum’s sewing machine and collecting clothes from local second-hand stores.

"I honestly couldn't stop knitting. My creativity took over so I started Itchy Knits. I've been very lucky to have so many creative friends who were willing to collaborate and showcase my pieces."

Each piece that Buckley makes is a one-off product, that she pledges to never be recreated again. A lover of rare clothing, she is fascinated with the idea of being able to showcase one’s individuality, and knowing that no one else will have the same outfit.

Buckley also uses second-hand yarn in her pieces, which she sources from charity shops and online. She said that it makes for more interesting combinations and creations.

Her unique creative process is all about bringing her ideas to life with yarn.

“Once I have a vague idea, it all really happens with the yarn. I lay out all the purples and greens I have gathered together, if those are the chosen colours, and then plan out what might be possible. If I only have a tiny bit of one colour it may only end up being one stripe in the garment.”

Buckley's advice for anyone looking to begin their own fashion business is that the biggest hurdle is to start.

I started working in retail and I loved every opportunity to learn more about clothing. Who you know really does make a difference, so don’t be afraid to network and be kind to everyone.

Her current goal is to keep her passion for making and creating alive, whether that means continuing to knit unique one-off designs, or venturing into a different avenue in the fashion industry.

“I hope to continue creating things for people that can appreciate the time and effort it took to make something. Adding value to people’s lives and bringing joy would make me very happy.”
