Designer Focus: Kavita Patel, Xaura

Kavita Patel fell in love with creating and designing fashion through her aunt, who taught her how to sew up outfits for her Barbie dolls. Her interest in fashion was further nurtured by her grandfather’s saree block printing factory, where she was mesmerised by the hand techniques of wooden blocks being carved and printed onto fabric.

“Hand embroidery is a very common practice in India that supports local economics and doesn’t exploit labour,” added Patel.

These traditional craft processes have shaped Patel’s relationship with fashion from an early age. This influence can be seen in many of her designs for Xaura, her fashion label.

Producing uniquely-made artisan clothing that draws from her Indian heritage, Xaura’s brand mission is to empower women to express themselves freely and connect with their inner radiance. Each and every Xaura garment is hand-made and slowly constructed by women from marginalised communities, providing them with the opportunity to gain training and financial independence.

Patel’s creative process is strongly influenced by the great outdoors and nature. First choosing the fabric, Patel then creates a design that is catered towards the weight and fall of the fabric. She then finishes with embroidery, adding little details like embroidered buttons and tassels to construct a one-of-a-kind garment for her customers.

Looking forward, Patel wants to continue helping and supporting artisans with livelihoods and sheds light on the unique designs and influence of India.

“My goal is to keep working with as many handcrafted artisans from all over India and showcase their skills through creating modern timeless garments.”

She also hopes to have Xaura’s garments featured in stores that share similar values to the brand.
