Designer Focus: Tuhirangi Blair, Lucky Dip

Lucky Dip is the culmination of Tuhirangi Blair’s experience working in fashion design and his personal mission to create the perfect shirt.

After completing a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Fashion at AUT, Blair interned at Nepenthes New York, working with Japanese-born American fashion designer, Daiki Suzuki. Following his internship, Blair landed a role at Workshop Denim, where he was able to work closely with the brand's designer and founder, Chris Cherry.

Through these experiences, Blair was able to develop extensive knowledge and appreciation of vintage garments and untraditional shirt making.

Determined to create his own shirt concepts, he started Lucky Dip.

“I was curious about what I thought would be the perfect shirt and if I could make it myself," explained Blair.

Focusing on the functionality, structure and feel of vintage shirting, all of Lucky Dip's one-off garments are constructed in Māngere, Auckland.

His project quickly developed into a thriving small business, with Blair's shirts being available for purchase on his store's website and a selection of retail stores.

Every shirt from Lucky Dip is one-of-a-kind and handcrafted by Blair, only using repurposed material.

He finds inspiration for his designs through travelling, visiting thrift stores and sourcing beautiful fabrics.

"The fabric speaks for itself, and I let it lead the way regarding designing a garment for Lucky Dip.”

Recently, Auckland Museum acquired Blair's capsule collection that was inspired by the star cluster Matariki.

“Being included in the museum was an outstanding achievement; however, I am most proud that it will inspire the next generation of designers.”

Moving forward, Blair plans to continue his quest to make the perfect shirt and work with other talented and like-minded designers.
