Instagram has suffered a severe data leak, with their most popular users as the target. While it has not yet been announced how many high-profile users had their information made public, it has been confirmed that the number is exceptionally high.
The social media service suffered a massive privacy breach as vulnerable information from their users was made public. This included contact information (such as email addresses and phone numbers) as well as locations.
There has been a lot of uncertainty surrounding the data and how the leak came about. Instagram even released a warry statement questioning if that data came exclusively from their platform of from a conglomeration.
However, this is not Instagram’s first hacking issue. In 2017 the brand saw a group of celebrities private photos and information made public and sold off for new internet currency Bitcoins. While that leak was resolved, this latest scandal speaks to the power of online scavengers and has some questioning the safety of high profile users.
