Designer Focus: Eloise Bloomfield, Silk Eloise

Having always had a strong interest in fashion, it was no surprise that Eloise Bloomfield knew that the industry was right for her.

Her journey into fashion did not start at an exact moment, but she admits over time she has developed a creative interest and it is something she enjoys very much. Bloomfield said that being able to create the silk clothing worn by other people other than herself is ‘surreal.’

Her grandmother is the biggest influence in starting up her silk clothing line, as she is a silk seamstress herself.

“She gave me an excellent knowledge of the fabric, inspiring me to specialise in silk.”

Silk is Bloomfield's favourite fabric to sew with, as she enjoys how chic it can look, as well as being a casual look, but she also finds it extremely comfortable to wear.

Silk By Eloise is set apart through aesthetic values and practices. The label specialises in silk and silk only. In creating Silk By Eloise, it was an important factor that all parties involved were based in New Zealand.

It was essential to minimise the effects of over-consumption, therefore Bloomfield decided to run her business by selling smaller collections and made-to-order pieces. Following a made-to-order business model ensures nothing goes to waste. In addition, all collections are one of a kind with limited numbers to create sentimental value for her customers.

Her inspiration and creative process behind the garments she makes stems from wanting to feel the best in one of her pieces. Bloomfield said that her clothing needs to be comfortable, but still practical, and that silk has the ability to do both.

“Silk is such a luscious fabric and itself is an inspiration. I always factor in the wear of the material in specific styles.”

When designing, Bloomfield seeks advice from her friends and family on items they would choose from a collection, and she does not follow a structured process.

“Generally, I will brainstorm on things that are unique and true to the Silk By Eloise brand. It starts with an item and often turns out completely different. It is always exciting when samples are completed, and the idea has come to life.”

She admits to having made mistakes in her work before, but that she has learnt so much more in the process. Citing feedback from important people in her life as vital support, but most of all taking her time has been the biggest factor in her success.

Bloomfield has plans to expand her label. She is primarily excited to work on the growth of her business sustainably and ethically, and to be able to ensure Silk by Eloise is creating garments that will last a lifetime.
