New Judge Announced For Hokonui Fashion Design Awards 2023

Hokonui Fashion Design Awards have announced Vicki Taylor as a new judge for this year's event.

Through a chance meeting between Taylor stockist Mary-Jane and chairperson for the Hokonui Awards, Vicki Taylor, owner of boutique fashion brand Taylor was offered the opportunity to feature as the newest judge at this year's Hokonui Fashion Design Awards.

This year marks the 35th anniversary of the awards, making it the longest-running fashion design award of its type within New Zealand. This award celebrates many creatives throughout New Zealand, including students just starting out in the fashion world.

“There are very few fashion awards in New Zealand for students to enter these days, so it is imperative to have these events to support the development of our creative talent,” Vicki explained.

She also went on to say that by supporting these awards, a stronger generation of New Zealand designers will begin to emerge. For many young designers, getting to see their designs translated onto the catwalk is an important learning experience.

Over two incredible nights, volunteers work hard to create a fabulous energy and seamless show for all to enjoy. You can also expect to see unbridled talent by New Zealand designers thinking outside the box by being innovative and unique.

“These designers create pieces because they are artworks; they are simply beautiful. It doesn’t matter how much fabric or time is required,” she said.

As a first-time attendee, Vicki can’t wait to get among it all at this year's awards. Her last trip to the South Island helped inspire her upcoming summer collection. Now she looks forward to seeing what inspiration she can get from her time at the awards.

As a judge, Vicki is even given a chance to showcase her own brand on the runway this year which has been a great highlight for her.

Entries for the 2023 awards are now open, and tickets go on sale on the 5th of July.
